Katie Diamond Art and Comix

Workshops

Queer Comix (how-to)
1.5 hours minimum, 2 hours preferred
In this workshop, Katie will teach the basics about drawing and perspective, while covering pieces of Queer Comic History. By relying on our histories, and using comic art as a format for telling our stories, we are able to educate ourselves, our peers, our allies, and our enemies. A small piece of the workshop will be basic lecture and education, and then we'll workshop our comics together to further educate ourselves, and each other.

Framing Your Media Message (workshop)
1 hour minimum, 1.5 hours preferred
It's easy to get caught up in the rumble tumble that is the mainstream media when trying to promote an event, a cause, or an organization. Katie will walk participants through how to take a message and make it dynamic and powerful. We'll spend time with abstract examples, and then launch into how to make participants' own work have a better media appeal.

Graphic Design (workshop)
1 hour minimum, 1.5 hours preferred
Good and compelling Graphic Design is not hard to make all by yourself--with just a few simple things to keep in mind! Katie will walk participants through 35 slides, engaging everyone in an open conversation about what "works" and "doesn't work" about each design. At the end of this class, we'll discuss how to make great and easy images for anything, and workshop each other's projects about how to go about doing so!

No Straight Lines: Drawing Gender and Sexuality in Comics (presentation)
1.5 hours minimum, 2 hours preferred
In this talk, Diamond dissects the process she went through to create the succinct and rich visuals for telling Johnny’s story, and the various struggles and triumphs of what it means to represent gender and sexuality in two dimensions. Years of study and experimentation have given Diamond the tools to fully examine and create artistic methods that allow for subtly and intrinsically altering readers’ perspectives on culturally taboo topics such as transsexuality, transgenderism, sex, and sexuality.

SALACIOUS Magazine: The Beginning (presentation)

1.5 hours minimum, 2 hours preferred
Starting up a magazine is difficult enough--imagine starting up a smut magazine with a queer, feminist, anti-racist mission and a focus on illustration and high art! Katie will walk through the various trials and tribulations she encountered creating and running SALACIOUS, and take questions on the process.
